“3s The Crossbreed” is the result of an inherited instinct to look ahead, a small masterpiece of Italian oenological research.

Originally created as a challenge to compete with the French wine market, today this grape variety fully embraces the sustainability and innovation principles at the heart of Trebotti’s organic philosophy.

The Incrocio Manzoni 6.0.13 grape variety was developed in the 1930s thanks to the work of Prof. Luigi Manzoni, Dean of the School of Oenology of Conegliano Veneto, the oldest and most important wine school in the world along with the School of Oenology of Bordeaux. At that time, agronomists’ research in viticulture was strongly focused on finding new grape varieties. The goal was both to develop varieties more resistant to diseases and parasites and to expand and improve Italian grape varieties to compete more effectively with the French wine market.

The most commonly used agronomic method for developing new varieties was grafting. In this regard, Luigi Manzoni was a pioneer. Thanks to his agronomic skills and genetic knowledge (just a few years earlier William Bateson, who coined the term “genetics”, had spread Mendel’s studies in Europe), he was among the first to focus on pollination. He dedicated years of research to creating new grape varieties by pollinating the flowers of one variety with those of another. He carried out this work meticulously and with great care, leading Luigi Manzoni to create hundreds of “crossbreeds” — entirely new varieties that carry the genetic heritage of the parent plants.

Among these, the most famous white variety is Incrocio 6.0.13: the plant in his experimental vineyard was located in row 6, vine 13, where Luigi Manzoni pollinated Riesling Renano with Pinot Bianco.
